Hello family, friends, and community. Linda Speelman here. I am writing to ask for help. You may know that my son, Alex, has been in a near lifelong battle with brain cancer. He is now experiencing the end stages of this horrible disease and requires constant care. He has decided to go forward with radiation treatment to his brain stem to help alleviate symptoms and perhaps give him a few more months to live. Simultaneously, my husband, Dan, is battling 4th stage lung cancer with metastatic cancer in his adrenal glands and a huge skin cancer on his side. While the treatments of Keytruda seem to be shrinking Dan’s tumors, he repeatedly gets antibiotic-resistant infections that land him in the hospital. So he has not been healthy enough to continue treatment. He is currently on his 9th hospital stay this year. When he’s not in the hospital, he’s home. I am the primary caregiver for both of my guys. The social service network is far too slow to respond to keep up with my family’s needs. So I have been covering the cost of additional CNA home care for Alex or Dan, depending. Many trips to Mayo Clinic in Rochester, and if Alex makes it to radiation treatment, there will be a dozen more. Dan requires expensive specialty transportation to his treatments at Allina Cancer Center as well. So with all of the transport, travel expenses, professional help at home, and loss of income, I am running out of money before my guys run out of time. For the month of August, the total extra expenses were nearly $4000. Our family, 2 of 3 of us disabled and on disability, without my income, we’re running a severe deficit. I can only hope that your kind donations will help me comfort and care for these two for another short time and keep us together as a family. If Dan can get through the infections, he will resume cancer treatment. If Alex’s symptoms are helped by radiation treatment, then he has a final wish of sitting on the beach watching the ocean with a margarita in hand. Please help.
